This process is like opening an app on a tablet—it’s all done by touch on the main screens in the center of your dashboard.

If you just got into your Audi and noticed the glowing strips of light along the doors, dashboard, and footwells — those are your ambient lights, and yes, you can change the color. The whole thing takes about 30 seconds once you know where to look in the MMI. This guide walks you through finding the setting, picking a color, and adjusting brightness, whether you want to use a preset theme or pick your own custom color.

What You Need to Know Before Changing Your Audi Ambient Lighting

  • Ambient lighting is not standard on every Audi — it requires the LED Interior Lighting package or equivalent; if you don’t see it in your MMI menu, your trim may not include it
  • The menu path on most 2019+ Audis is: MMI Home → Car → Lights & Visibility → Interior Lighting
  • You can choose a preset theme (easiest) or go fully custom with separate colors for surface lighting and contour lines

The Short Answer: Find It in MMI Settings and Pick Your Color

On the MMI touchscreen, tap Car, then Lights & Visibility, then Interior Lighting. From there, pick a preset theme or tap Individual to choose your own colors and adjust brightness. Settings save automatically.

How To Change Your Interior Ambient Lighting: STEP-BY-STEP

Before You Start — Does Your Audi Have Customizable Ambient Lighting?

Not every Audi includes color-adjustable ambient lighting. On most models it’s part of an optional package — commonly called the LED Interior Lighting Plus Package or Interior Lighting Package. Base trims typically come with static white or red footwell lights that can’t be changed through the MMI.

The easiest way to check: go to Car → Lights & Visibility in your MMI. If you see an “Interior Lighting” option with a color picker, you’re good to go. If the menu only has an on/off toggle or no interior lighting option at all, your car doesn’t have the package installed.

Step 1 — Get to the Lighting Menu

  1. Start your Audi and let the MMI fully load
  2. On the center touchscreen, tap the Car icon (it looks like a small car outline — on some models it may be labeled “Vehicle”)
  3. Tap Lights & Visibility
  4. Tap Interior Lighting

You’re now on the main ambient lighting screen.

Step 2 — Choose Your Color or Theme

You have two options here:

Option A — Use a Preset Theme (Easiest)

Audi includes several pre-built themes that set color, brightness, and zone balance all at once. Common preset names include:

  • Maritime
  • Solar
  • Contour
  • Polar

Tap any preset name and the lighting across your entire interior updates instantly. This is the quickest option and a good starting point.

Option B — Individual / Custom

Tap Individual for full control. You’ll typically see two separate settings:

  • Surface lighting color — the softer, broader glow (footwells, lower door panels, center console). Tap it to open a color palette with up to 30 colors and select your choice.
  • Line/Contour lighting color — the sharp, thin strips that follow the dashboard and door panel edges. Tap to open the same palette. You can set this to a completely different color for a two-tone look.

Step 3 — Adjust Brightness

On the same Individual screen, look for a Brightness or Intensity slider. Drag it up or down to set how bright or subtle you want the lights. This applies to all zones unless your car has zone-specific brightness controls (available on some higher trims).

Step 4 — Done

That’s it. Settings save automatically — there’s no confirm button to press. Tap the Home icon or press the physical MMI button to exit the menu. Your lighting will stay exactly as you set it until you change it again.

How to Tell If Your Ambient Lighting Is Set Up Correctly

Not seeing what you expect in the menu? Here’s how to figure out what’s going on:

What you see in MMIWhat it means
Interior Lighting menu with color pickerFull ambient lighting package installed
Interior Lighting menu with on/off onlyBasic static lighting — color changes not available
No Interior Lighting option at allPackage not installed on your trim
Colors change but look washed out in daylightNormal — ambient lights are designed for low-light driving
Only some zones change colorYour car may have zones that are static (white only) by design

How to Get the Most Out of Your Audi Ambient Lighting

  • Sync with Drive Select modes. On many Audis, you can set different ambient colors for different drive modes — red for Dynamic, blue for Efficiency. Look for this in the Drive Select settings, not the lighting menu.
  • Dimmer is usually better at night. Full brightness can create glare on the windshield in the dark. A mid-range setting tends to look better and be less distracting.
  • Two-tone looks great, but test it first. Setting surface and contour lines to different colors sounds cool but some combinations look off in person. Try a few before committing.
  • If lighting suddenly goes to white or defaults, check whether you recently changed Drive Select modes — some Audis automatically shift lighting color when modes change, overriding your custom setting temporarily.

What to Do If the Ambient Lighting Isn’t Working or Won’t Change

The Interior Lighting option isn’t in my MMI. Your trim likely doesn’t include the ambient lighting package. Confirm by checking your original window sticker or calling your dealer with your VIN.

I can see the menu but there’s no color picker — just on/off. You have basic interior lighting (static color), not the extended RGB ambient system. These are two different hardware setups and the basic version can’t be upgraded through software alone.

My colors reset every time I start the car. Check if you have a Drive Select-linked lighting mode active. If a drive mode is overriding your custom color, disable that sync in the Drive Select settings.

Some zones won’t change color. Normal on some trims. Certain light zones (like reading lights or door handle lights) may be static white regardless of your ambient color setting.

The lighting is on but barely visible. Ambient lighting is designed to be subtle. If it looks extremely dim even at full brightness, check for a brightness reset or have the dealer confirm the lighting module is fully enabled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every Audi have color-changing ambient lighting? No. It’s typically part of an optional interior lighting package. Base trims usually have static lights only.

How many colors can I choose from? Most Audis with the full ambient lighting package offer up to 30 colors through the MMI color palette.

Can I set different colors for different parts of the car? Yes — in Individual mode you can typically set separate colors for the surface lighting (soft glow areas) and the contour lines (sharp edge strips). Some higher-trim models allow zone-by-zone control.

Will the colors stay the same after I turn the car off? Yes. Settings save automatically and will be there the next time you start the car, unless a Drive Select mode is set to override lighting.

Can I add ambient lighting if my car doesn’t have it? Not through software alone. The hardware — LED strips, wiring, and control module — needs to be physically installed. This is a dealer-level job, not a DIY swap.

Does ambient lighting affect my battery? Negligibly. The LED strips draw very little power and have no meaningful impact on your car’s battery.
