Why Does My Car Rattle When Idling?

Main Causes Of Rattling At Idle
1. A loose exhaust heat shield.
Heat shields are thin metal covers that protect nearby parts from exhaust heat, and rust or vibration can work their mounting bolts loose over time. A loose shield produces a distinctive tin-can rattle that often gets louder as engine RPM rises, even slightly. This is usually the cheapest cause on this list to fix.

2. A worn or broken engine mount.

Less common, but more serious: the honeycomb core inside a catalytic converter can break down with age, and loose pieces rattle inside the housing. This is worth taking seriously, since a disintegrating converter will eventually clog and can affect how the engine runs, it will also fail an emissions test, and repair costs run $500 to $2,500 per converter, more on vehicles that need multiple replaced.
6. Failing Belt Tensioner or Idler Pulley
Test: If turning the A/C on or off changes the noise, accessories driven by the serpentine belt become more likely suspects.
The serpentine belt tensioner and idler pulleys use bearings that can wear over time, creating rattling, clicking, or rough noises at idle. A weak tensioner can also allow the belt to vibrate more than it should. If the noise changes when the A/C turns on or off, the change in load on the accessory drive can be a useful clue that the sound is coming from a belt-driven component.
